How to extract and organise hashtags from captions
Hashtags can be scattered through captions, briefs and campaign notes. Extracting them into a line-based list makes duplication and spelling easier to review without claiming that more tags automatically produce more reach.
Extract before editing
Keep the original caption, then collect tags in first-seen order. Unicode letters and numbers may be valid, while spaces and most punctuation end a tag.
Review consistency and intent
Compare spelling, singular and plural forms, brand capitalisation and campaign dates. Similar-looking tags can lead to different conversations, so do not merge them only because they share a prefix.
Build the final set for the platform
Deduplicate exact tags, remove irrelevant ones and check the current platform rules. Join the approved list with spaces only after the content and accessibility review is complete.
Worked example
A caption containing #ClearTools twice and #SEO once produces two unique candidates in first-seen order.
Limitations to review
- Extraction does not measure hashtag popularity.
- Platform parsing rules can differ.
- A tag can be syntactically valid but contextually inappropriate.
NEXT TASK
Apply the workflow
Open Hashtag Extractor, keep an untouched source and verify the output before using it. Continue with the joining the approved tag list when the task needs another step.
Common question
Does this workflow replace review?
No. The tool performs a narrow transformation. Accuracy, permissions and destination requirements still need human review.
